3 Md. Girls Praised For Red Cross Collection Work

TIMONIUM, Md. (AP) -- Three teenage girls in Maryland, including one who lost an uncle in the war in Iraq, are being honored for raising money for the Red Cross.

The 14-year-olds have raised nearly $2,000 for bereavement efforts for military families. The funds cover everything from transportation to lodging money.

Karimah Crum came up with the idea after her uncle, Sgt. AnthonyDavis, died more than two years ago. Aid from the Red Cross enabled dozens of family members to attend the funeral.

Crum got her two best friends involved in the program, called "A Penny from the Heart," and the three placed collection cans inside Windsor Mill and Dumbarton middle schools.

The girls were being honored Monday at a Memorial Day ceremony at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens in Timonium.
