2010 ALCS Game 4.....Something looked Familiar

So last night I am enjoying the ALCS until something happened in the second inning that made it seem like I was reliving a nightmare. Robinson Cano, who has been on fire this entire season, hit a fly ball to right field that barely got over the wall. Nelson Cruz was drifting back and seemed like he might have a play on it. While reaching up a couple of Yankee fans reached over and interfered with Cruz's glove. Almost immediately my young mind saw some idiot kid in the 1996 ALCS that "stole" an out from Tony Tarasco. And if I didn't remember ESPN made sure to show that highlight over and over again. Now granted both situations are completely different. Cano's hit was clearly over the wall and wouldve taken an amazing effort from Cruz to make the catch. The Tarasco play, the ball was not going over the wall, would Tarasco have caught it? who knows. That doesn't change the fact that a fan reached over the wall. Another major difference is the effect it had on the game and series. The Cano HR was early in the game and the Rangers had plenty of time to recover and did they ever winning 10-3. Jeter's HR in 1996 was in the 8th inning and that home run tied the game and the Yanks won in extras. The O's did win Game 2 but if that home run doesn't happen maybe the Orioles come home up 2-0 instead of tied 1-1. Look I understand that the Jeffrey Maier play is woulda, coulda, shoulda, but its a harsh reminder of how close the Orioles were back in 96 and 97 and how far we have fallen since. The only saving grace I take from the play last night is that the Yankees did not benefit again by losing last night and maybe just maybe instant replay in baseball will expand there is no way around it.
