Lawrenceville man accused of attempted home invasion while armed, police say
Authorities are searching for a 21-year-old man accused of trying to break into a Gwinnett County apartment while armed with a gun in late March.
Detectives have identified the suspect seen in doorbell camera footage as Sonny Stephens of Lawrenceville.
According to Gwinnett County police, officers were called around 1 a.m. on March 22 to The Preserve at Legacy Park apartments after reports of suspicious activity. When officers arrived, the resident showed them surveillance video of a man, later identified as Stephens, attempting to kick in the front door. Police said the suspect was seen holding a gun.
The tenant told officers the same man had come to the door earlier that day, also armed. The resident said he did not know the suspect or why he was targeting the apartment.
Investigators obtained footage from both incidents and have charged Stephens with criminal attempt to commit home invasion and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
Detectives say they have not been able to locate Stephens, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
Police did not say how Stephens was identified from the surveillance video.
Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators. Authorities say a cash reward is being offered for tips that lead to an arrest and indictment.
