Truck Driver Killed After Slamming Into Fort Worth Train
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - The driver of a pickup in Fort Worth apparently ignored the flashing lights and safety arms at a railroad crossing and slammed into a train Monday morning.
It happened at a crossing on 38th Street, near North Main. The westbound pickup slammed into a northbound BNSF freight train.
The impact crushed the vehicle and there was nothing rescuers could do.
"The truck was pretty much demolished and he [driver] was pronounced dead here on scene," Fort Worth police Sergeant Pedro Criado explained.
Police say it's clear the truck wasn't stuck on the tracks, nor was the driver attempting to "beat" the train.
"The railroad crossing arm was down and functioning. While the train was going northbound he drove through that crossing arm and then collided with the train," Criado said adding, "Most of the train had already gone by, and it was really close to the caboose of the train is what I was told is what he collided with."
As a result of the crash a few of the train cars derailed. No one on the train was injured.
A section of NE 38th Street was closed temporarily while investigators recreated the accident scene.
The identity of the truck driver has not been released.
