Service Sunday For Former Texas Congressman Brooks

BEAUMONT (AP) - A public service will be held Sunday at Lamar University for former Texas Congressman Jack Brooks.

Brooks, who spent 42 years in the U.S. House and was in the 1963 Dallas motorcade when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, died Tuesday in Beaumont. He was 89.

Lamar spokesman Brian Sattler said Thursday that the service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Montagne (mahn-TAIN') Center on the Beaumont campus.

Brooks attended Lamar then earned a journalism degree from the University of Texas. He served in the Marines in World War II and retired as a colonel from the Marine Corps Reserves in 1972. Brooks, who also had a UT law degree, was a state legislator before his election to the U.S. House.

Brooks failed in his 1994 re-election bid.
