Man Gets Life Without Parole For Murdering Ex-Girlfriend's Mother
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) -- A Fort Worth man convicted of stabbing his ex-girlfriend and killing her mother has been sentenced to life without parole.
Jurors deliberated several hours on Wednesday before convicting Samuel Velez, 36, of capital murder in the death of Ana Gomez. Because prosecutors waived the death penalty, Velez received an automatic sentence of life without the possibility of parole.
Prosecutors say that on the morning of Aug. 6, 2012, Velez broke into his ex-girlfriend's trailer in the 6200 block of Lt. JG Barnett Road, where she lived with her parents.
Velez repaired the door he had kicked in, stashed knives around the residence, and waited for hours for the family to return.
About 5:30 p.m., his ex-girlfriend, Yudith Pina, returned to residence with her mother. Velez then confronted the two, viciously stabbing both women with a 7.5" knife.
At one point, Velez stood over the mother as she laid helplessly on the floor, repeatedly stabbing her. She suffered at least 16 knife wounds and died at the scene.
Velez stabbed Pina in the arms, chest, back and head and, afterward, bent down and kissed her on the lips.
Pina managed to escape the trailer while Velez was cleaning himself up. He gave chase until Pina began screaming for help.
Velez fled to his car, changed his clothes, and drove to a nearby convenience store, where he purchased cigarettes. He was arrested six hours later at his apartment on East Berry Street in Fort Worth.
"The defendant's cruel obsession for his ex-girlfriend resulted in tragedy for the Pina family," said Prosecutor Mark Thielman. "The credit for this successful prosecution rests with the courage of the surviving victim and the swift and diligent work of the Fort Worth Homicide Division."
