Storytelling at its best, folk music covers love, war, work, racism, education and all things important to the songwriter and community. Every culture has its own style of folk music, which has evolved through time and been passed down from generation to generation. Here, a list of some of North Texas' best folk songwriters.

The 25-year-old singer/songwriter quickly established his reputation as one of the area's top folk artists with the release of his debut album "Waiting for the Flowers to Bloom."

Performing both original and traditional songs, recording, and serving as accordionist and back-up vocals for other artists, Jennifer Mansfield Peal has shown audiences her "elegant and quirky" style has much versatility. Peal's songs are inspired by true folk tradition; she even states on her website that she writes about "people and situations that amuse me, confuse me, or piss me off." Her newest album, "Putting on the Old Folk's Clothes," was released in 2009 and includes both originals and traditional family music.

Leslie Sakal

Folk singer/songwriter Leslie Sakal is a self-taught guitarist and vocalist with only three-and-a-half years under her belt playing the guitar. Sakal was first trained to play the violin and cello, but decided to pick up a guitar and explore songwriting in 2007, adding songs to her collection ever since. Her latest single, "Not Getting Old/Tuesday," was released in 2010.

Owning his first guitar at age nine, Carl Sullivan's music has evolved through the years from a folksy bluegrass sound to a mix of pure acoustic and pop. Sullivan grew up in the Smokey Mountains of North Carolina and was heavily influenced by Irish folk music. Sullivan's CD, "Flying Backwards," was first released in 2008. He is currently working on a second album.
