Yosemite National Park Experimenting With Traffic Changes To Protect Wildlife, Ease Congestion

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK (KCBS) -- There are some changes coming for drivers visiting Yosemite National Park.

It's been a booming year for the park, and as hordes of tourists drove away after the long holiday weekend, park officials set in motion experiments to try and ease congestion, and prevent crashes.

"What they're going to do is basically make North Side Drive, and South Side Drive two way roads again. That will be the first time since the '90's," Tom Stienstra said.

They are also closing a portion of Sentinel Drive, and an area near Camp 6 that regularly gets jammed up.

"They're going to do one other thing – they are going to post lower speed limits in Yosemite Valley," Stienstra said.

Stienstra said 37 bears have been hit by speeding drivers in the park in the last year alone.
