Whitman Spending Nears $100 Million
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ Billionaire Meg Whitman has spent more than $99 million so far in her quest to become California's governor, easily surpassing the previous record for a single candidate.
The Republican nominee reported Monday that she spent nearly $20 million in the six-week period ending June 30, which included the weeks immediately before and after California's primary.
Whitman raised about $3.3 million from outside sources during that time, while Democrat Jerry Brown reported he had raised slightly more than $2.6 million.
Whitman's spending includes $91 million of her own money. It eclipses the $78 million Democrat Gray Davis spent to become governor in 2002.
Her campaign has about $10.3 million in the bank. Brown reported Monday that he has $23 million cash on hand and spent just $131,000 during the six-week period.
