Tech Report: Apple's Expected iPad Mini To Compete With Microsoft's Surface

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — The invitations are in the mail. Apple is holding a press event next Tuesday where it's highly expected to introduce a miniature iPad. The Cupertino-based company is also rumored to be introducing a 13-inch model of its Retina Display MacBook Pro, as well as updated Mac Minis.

The news comes the same day we're learning more about Microsoft's Surface tablet, which goes on sale October 26th at a starting price of $499. A version with a keyboard that doubles as a cover will start at $599.

KCBS Tech Report:

You may be feeling sticker shock from those prices, but $499 is actually where the latest iPad starts. I thought Microsoft would go cheaper too, but they can make all sorts of great arguments with their 32 GB of memory and plenty of apps out the door.

Microsoft has a lot riding on Windows 8 and their tablets. With these prices, I think the question is, will they be a player?
