Swastikas Painted On Frat House With Jewish Members At Stanford
STANFORD (CBS SF) -- Investigators were looking into a possible hate crime on the Stanford campus after vandals scrawled vicious messages and swastikas across a frat house with a large number of Jewish members.
The graffiti was discovered at the Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) fraternity house Saturday night. According to the Stanford Daily, the structure was painted with swastikas, personal slurs and epithets. A pentagram was painted on the Casa Italiana, the only residence dedicated to the study of Italian language and culture.
Student Molly Horwitz said she wasn't surprised.
"Is this what we should be expecting? Is it bad that some people are not surprised by this?" Horwitz told KPIX 5.
Liana Kadisha, president of the Stanford Israel Association told the Stanford Daily there has been a "rise in hostility toward Jewish communities," on campus since the university student senate approved a resolution to divest from corporations who they deem complicit in the human rights abuses in Israel and Palestine.
She said many campus groups have refused to co-sponsor events with the Stanford Israel Association.
SAE has been under administrative scrutiny. The fraternities housing privileges for were revoked for the coming year due to a violation of Title IX regulations.
Mariam Pollock of the Stanford Israel Association was saddened by the news.
"I was on my phone in the library, I was trying to study a little but I started crying a little in the library."
