'Star Wars' Spinoffs Featuring 'Han Solo' Announced

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – The Disney green light has been lit for the next set of Star Wars Anthology films, featuring the origin story of that stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf-herder, Han Solo. No word yet as to Harrison Ford's involvement, if any, in the film.

The storyline is set before meeting Luke Skywalker and Ben Kenobi in the cantina on Tatooine. But revolves around the younger version of Han Solo, before he became the iconic scoundrel/smuggler turned Rebellion General. No actor has been selected to play the role. Let the rumors and speculations begin.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, best known for The LEGO Movie and the 21 Jump Street movies, will take the helm to direct, according to StarWars.com.

Miller and Lord will be joined by Lawrence Kasdan and son Jon Kasdan to screenwrite the SW Anthology project. The elder Kasdan is not a stranger to the Star Wars universe. Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens film due out in theaters December 2015. Jon Kasdan wrote the Sundance featured film The First Time and has written for the television series Dawson's Creek and Freaks and Geeks.

The film's producer and Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy tells StarWars.com "It's not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I'm excited to say we've found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story."

The Star Wars Anthology series featuring Han Solo is slated to release on May 25, 2018.
