BERKELEY (CBS SF) – Ivan Rabb, an East Bay high school senior who is one of the nation's top college basketball recruits, announced Monday that he will continue his career in the Bay Area.
"I just want to announce that I'm going to the University of California, Berkeley," Ivan said to cheers at his mom's café in Oakland.
The country's top five basketball programs have had their eye on Ivan all season. The 6'10" forward said he wrestled in his head between Arizona and Cal for weeks, but he said being a Golden Bear felt right.
"Felt the most at home," Ivan told KPIX 5. "I felt like it was family from day one."
Last Month, Ivan sunk the game-winning free throw for Bishop O'Dowd, making the Dragons state champions.
Ivan is an exceptional player, but coaches say he's also a humble person. "Never talked back, never disrespectful, incredible young man," said Bishop O'Dowd coach Lou Richie.
KPIX 5 asked Tami Rabb, Ivan's mom, how she was able to raise a well-rounded kid. "Keep a lot of good people around him. Keep him in church, put God first," Rabb said.
Ivan said he's relieved to put this big decision behind him. But will this student stay all four years at Cal, or bounce to the NBA? That decision is still up in the air.
"Right now it's tough for me to answer that question so we'll see what happens," Ivan said.
