Slate Of America's Cup Competitors Revealed

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) –The official America's Cup competitors list has been revealed, and the field, which could still grow, consists of eight teams from seven countries.

The international field represents China, France, Italy, New Zealand, Korea, Sweden and the U.S., and as many as three more teams could be added.

"We welcome the teams officially to San Francisco, the gorgeous host city of the 34th annual America's Cup," said Chairman of America's Cup Event Authority Richard Worth.

KCBS' Margie Shafer Reports:

He also unveiled a logo for the 2013 race where the A's in America look like sail boats, and resemble the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said he is in awe of the athleticism of the sailors.

"You've got to have the agility of the professional basketball player to be able to be on that boat and function," said Lee.

He went on to say that competitive sailing also required the preciseness of a 49er Super Bowl team, and the execution of the world champion Giants' baseball team.

"We've already raised $2 million, and that's before the nonprofit status has been granted," said Lee.
