(CBS SF) - Oakland students joined renowned musician and East Oakland native Sheila E. in a performance Thursday night to drum up support for the school district.

The Oakland Unified School District Jazz Festival was held at Oakland Technical High School, located at 4351 Broadway.

Bands from many Oakland middle and high schools, including Alliance Academy, Bret Harte, Edna Brewer, Elmhurst, Roosevelt, United for Success, Westlake, Oakland Tech and Skyline, performed along with the district's "Big O" teacher band.

Sheila E. showcased the benefits of teaching music in school, and brought in her brother Juan Escovedo, saxophone player Mary Fettig and composer Javier Navarrete on stage.

The festival is part of a campaign by the nonprofit group Elevate Hope Foundation to promote music at schools.

Following the jazz festival, Sheila E. headlined at "Elevate Oakland" a benefit concert Saturday night at Oakland's Fox Theater with fellow musician Michael Franti.

The show will raise funds to expand music education at Oakland schools.

The concert also featured performances by Ozomatli, Orianthi and Goapele, among others.
