Sharing Economy Extends To Yachts On San Francisco Bay
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) -- The sharing economy is extending onto the waters of San Francisco Bay, with yacht-sharing gaining popularity among nautical enthusiasts.
"It gives you that boat ownership experience without having to make that investment," Captain Lisa with SailTime San Francisco Bay said. She teaches people on 36-40 foot yachts that they can buy a membership in.
"We also feel that it's very good for the environment to have a shared program," Captain Lisa said.
Memberships are priced from $495 to $1,200 a month, depending on the size of the vessel and the frequency of use.
Scott Ingham and his wife Kathy are trying out the yacht-sharing economy before they plan to retire in about ten years. For them, it's a way to test the waters of boat ownership.
"At this point, we're looking at the options of sailing, an extended sail, and live aboard. And, so getting out on the bay for our sailing experience before we retire is gonna be needed," Ingham said.
"It opens up the dreams that people have about being on the water, and having that romantic sailing experience, gliding through using nothing but air and wind," Captain Lisa said.
