SF Transit Director Wants Future Muni Travel Times Cut In Half

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – San Francisco's transportation director has outlined a long-term transit strategy, which calls for cutting the travel times on some bus and light rail routes in half.

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency Director Ed Reiskin said the plan is ambitious, but necessary to accommodate the population growth that is expected in San Francisco over the next 20-30 years, with city officials estimating an extra 100,000 households and 190,000 jobs.

"In order to accommodate all of that growth, we're going to need a lot more people on transit and in order to do that, we're going to make transit a much more preferable alternative to an automobile," Reiskin said.

In discussing the 50-year plan on Tuesday, Reiskin said they need to address speeds, areas where buses back up and how to better connect with new job centers.

But Malcolm Heinicke, who sits on the SFMTA Board of Directors, called the plan nearly meaningless.

"Let's not talk about 50-year plans. Let's talk about how we take the existing network, the very first bullet point of your 50-year plan, and talk about how we improve the speed and the capacity there," Heinicke said.

Although Reiskin had very few details about exactly how the transit agency should go about making improvements, he said it's important to look at the plan now and figure out exactly how much it might cost.
