UPDATE: San Mateo Home Invasion Robbery Suspects Involved In Deadly Freeway Crash
SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- A vehicle carrying three suspects allegedly involved in an early Thursday morning home invasion robbery in San Mateo were involved in a deadly crash on a Highway 101 off-ramp as they fled the scene, authorities said.
San Mateo police investigators said the incident began with a reported home invasion robbery at a residence on the 1600 block of Roberta Dr. around 3:44 a.m.
As officers arrived on the scene, two vehicles sped away from the home in different directions and a pursuit of both vehicles was initiated.
"One traveled across the San Mateo Bridge, but due to high speeds officers ended their attempt to follow," San Mateo Police said in a news release. "The other vehicle traveled northbound on US 101, but also due to high speeds, officers lost visual and ended their attempt to locate it."
Investigators said that around 4:05 a.m. they received a call from the California Highway Patrol advising them there had been a single car fatal collision on the Peninsula Ave. off-ramp from northbound US 101.
The vehicle was determined to be one of the two leaving the home invasion robbery scene. It was occupied by three suspects. The male rear passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene, and the driver and front passenger -- a man and a woman -- who were injured and transported to the hospital with major injuries.
A third vehicle was also located at the scene. It was occupied by a single male passenger who was taken into custody.
Investigators determined there were at least 5 suspects involved in the home invasion robbery. The homeowner was not harmed during the robbery.
"What we have now is two separate investigations that are taking place by the San Mateo Police Department," said San Mateo Police Captain Dave Norris.
Police are investigating whether or not the home was specifically targeted in the home invasion.
Neighbors were shocked to hear about the crime happening in their usually quiet area.
"It's a shame that it's so close. Good people," said resident Felipe Mendoza. "Never anything bad, never any action, never anything exciting."
Police say there has been no criminal history associated with the house in almost 20 years. Police didn't say if anything was actually stolen from this house nor what contact the resident may have had with the suspects.
