Police Officer Opens Fire On Gunman After San Jose Bar Fight

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) - A police officer opened fire on a gunman after responding to a silent alarm at a bar in San Jose Sunday night, according to police.

Officers were dispatched to Richard's Bar at 1747 Alum Rock Avenue after employees activated the robbery alarm following a fight, said San Jose Police Officer Jose Garcia in a press release.

While officers spoke with security personnel, a suspect was seen entering the bar while armed with a gun, according to Garcia. The man, 38-year-old Gabriel Lorenzo of San Jose, was identified as being one of those involved in the earlier fight, said Garcia.

Gunshots were heard inside the bar and Lorenzo was then seen leaving through the rear door while still armed with a gun, according to Garcia.

Lorenzo pointed the firearm after refusing to comply to drop the weapon and one officer fired at Lorenzo with his service firearm, said Garcia. Lorenzo was not hit and was arrested without further incident.

One person inside the bar was struck by Lorenzo's gunfire, said Garcia. The victim was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer who opened fire and the officer who witnessed the officer-involved shooting were placed on routine paid administrative leave, according to Garcia.

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to contact Detective Sergeant Dave Gutierrez or Detective Liz Checke of the San Jose Police Department's Homicide Unit at (408) 277-5283. Persons wishing to remain anonymous can call the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP (7867), or may visit: svcrimestoppers.org/.
