San Jose Airport Getting Millions For Safety Improvement

SAN JOSE (KCBS) -- Mineta San Jose International Airport has landed a $7.5 million grant to improve airfield safety. The project should create more than 80 construction jobs.

The money will go towards building a new taxiway extension.

Airport spokesman Dave Vossbrink said the extension will do two important things.

KCBS' Mike Colgan Reports:

"It reduces the risk of accidents on the airfield itself and it opens up the possible development of aviation service on the west side of the airport," he said.

Airport spokesman Dave Vossbrink said that west side airfield improvement will allow the airport to be the base for more corporate and business jets.

"Quite literally this will pave the way for economic development on the west side of Silicon Valley's airport," he said.

The third phase of taxiway construction is scheduled to be completed by next summer.
