San Francisco Tree Vandal Caught On Camera; Supervisor Calls For Stricter Law Enforcement

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) — One San Francisco city supervisor, who is irritated with vandalism in his district, has posted video of a tree vandal in action.

District 8 Supervisor Scott Weiner wrote on his Facebook page that the video is disturbing just because of the blatant nature of the act. The video was taken at 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 11.

It's still dark but the camera points down the front steps of a home on Noe Street and towards the curb. It shows a man in a hoodie and a red backpack, reaching up and yanking down the main trunk of what looks like a newly planted tree, ripping branches off it and then walking away with it.

"We need more police presence - which we're working to do by staffing up the department - and consistent follow up in terms of arresting perpetrators and prosecuting them," Weiner wrote in his post. "Allowing an 'anything goes' criminal atmosphere for smaller crimes leads to more serious crimes."

Tree vandalism has been a problem in other parts of the city, particularly Golden Gate Park.
