San Francisco Teachers' Union Treasurer Accused Of Stealing $31,000 From Organization
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A former teachers' union treasurer pleaded not guilty in federal court in San Francisco Thursday to charges of stealing $31,611 from the union.
Kenneth Morris, 50, of Alameda, a former math teacher at Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco, was formerly the treasurer of San Francisco Archdiocesan American Federation of Teachers Local 2240. The union represents teachers, counselors, and librarians employed by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco and Diocese of San Jose.
He is accused in a grand jury indictment issued on Aug. 22 and unsealed Thursday with five counts of bank fraud and three counts of theft of union assets in 2017 and 2018.
In the bank fraud counts, Morris is accused of depositing five checks for teachers' union dues totaling $12,890 in his personal bank account instead of the union's account. In the theft counts, he is accused of embezzling a total of $18,721.
Morris pleaded not guilty to all counts during his arraignment before U.S. Magistrate Elizabeth Laporte. His next court appearance is a Sept. 18 status conference before U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer, the trial judge assigned to the case.
