Arrest Made In San Francisco Nob Hill Murder
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS / BCN) -- The roommate of an elderly man found dead in a Nob Hill apartment has been charged in connection with the homicide, police said Friday.
Officers called to make a welfare check Feb. 11 on Jack Baker found the 67-year-old brutally beaten, strangled and stabbed, apparently dead for more than a week.
"We're not really going to discuss motive at this time," said Lt. Lea Militello with the San Francisco Police Department's homicide detail.
She said 24-year-old Waheed Kesmatyer, who had lived with Baker for more than a year, was identified as a suspect based on interviews with other residents of the building.
Wahid had a minor criminal record and had been arrested Thursday in Marin County on a misdemeanor charge and a probation violation, Militello said.
San Francisco Supervisor David Chiu, whose district contains the neighborhood where the murder occurred, spoke about Baker during this week's board meeting, saying he was a local artist who drew murals and was well-liked by neighbors.
The murder was San Francisco's 13th of 2011.
