San Francisco Is Out Of The Running To Host America's Cup In 2017

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – As has been rumored, San Francisco is officially out of the running to host the next America's Cup in 2017.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee received a letter late Tuesday night from Russell Coutts, Director of the America's Cup Event Authority. Coutts said "we have therefore taken the difficult decision to no longer consider San Francisco as a possible candidate to host AC35 [the 35th America's Cup]."

Coutts did add that San Francisco could still be in the running to host an America's Cup World Series event in 2015 and/or 2016.

America's Cup officials are still looking at San Diego, Chicago and Bermuda as hosts for the regatta, and added that San Francisco could be in the running to host the race again in 2021.

In his letter to Mayor Lee, Coutts added that the America's Cup community greatly appreciated San Francisco's efforts in hosting the last America's Cup in 2013, which saw an amazing comeback from Oracle Team USA.

Race officials are expected to choose a destination sometime later this summer.
