San Franciscans Face A Crowded Field Of Candidates For Supervisor

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) – A whopping 21 candidates are vying for the right to represent the Southeast part of San Francisco on the Board of Supervisors.

The crowded race in District 10 includes Visitacion Valley, Bayview, Hunters Point and Potrero Hill, and the 21 candidates include a BART board member, a community college commissioner and a host of neighborhood activists.

KCBS' Barbara Taylor Reports:

Political analyst David Latterman said there's also an economic and ethnic mix of blacks, Asians and whites.

"Different groups of people want to hear different things," said Latterman. "They have different political viewpoints, different needs and priorities from the city, and the candidates have to be able to say something to all of these different groups."

Issues range from crime and poverty to housing, but political consultant Alex Clemens said the overriding issue is the economy.

"It's about jobs, economic development, making sure that you can feed your family," said Clemens. "Basically, kitchen table values are rising to the forefront."

Latterman, meanwhile, said District 10 is in a state of flux, with major development projects on tap at Mission Bay, the old Hunter's Point Shipyard and the Bayshore corridor that will re-shape the landscape.
