San Diego To Name Street After Harvey Milk

SAN DIEGO (CBS / AP) -- The San Diego City Council has voted unanimously to rename a street after gay civil rights hero Harvey Milk.

Spokesman Fernando Lopez said the city will be the first in the country to name a street after Milk.

The city plans a celebratory unveiling of the new street on May 22, Milk's birthday.

Milk was assassinated less than a year after he took public office in San Francisco on the Board of Supervisors.

Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, and championed gay rights.

Harvey Milk Street will replace Blaine Avenue in the city's Hillcrest neighborhood.
