Sacramento Police Fatally Shoot Man Allegedly Waving Knife

SACRAMENTO (CBS / AP) -- Sacramento police say two officers shot and killed a knife-waving suspect after a confrontation on a street.

Sgt. Bryce Heinlein, a police spokesman, says witnesses reported around 9:25 a.m. Monday that a suspect was walking down the street waving a knife over his head. They reported he had a gun in his waistband.

Heinlein says the man charged the first officer who arrived, who locked himself in his squad car.

He says two more officers arrived and fatally shot the man when he turned toward them with the knife.

No gun was found, but Heinlein says officers found a folding knife.

He described the suspect as a black man in his 50s or 60s.

Another officer was injured during the pursuit but was not harmed by the suspect.
