'Respect After Death' Act Takes Effect Giving Transgenders Right To Have Chosen Gender On Death Certificates

SACRAMENTO (CBS SF) -- The death certificates of transgender people in California will now reflect their chosen gender now that AB 1577 has gone into effect.

The bill known as the 'Respect After Death Act' took effect July 1. The legislation was championed by openly lesbian Assembly Speaker Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown over a year ago.

The Transgender Law Center co-sponsored the bill. Executive director Masen Davis told The Bay Area Reporter, it "brings us a significant step closer to making sure that all transgender people are able to live – and die – authentically in accordance with who they really are."
