Protesters Block Israel-Owned Ship From Unloading Cargo In Port Of Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Protesters have stopped longshoremen from unloading a ship partly owned by the Israeli government at the Port of Oakland.

Protesters blocked the Piraeus from docking Saturday, but the ship was able to return and safely dock Sunday night. But, protesters have blocked the entrances keeping it from being unloaded.

The protesters say they are angry about Isreal's recent military actions in the Gaza strip.

"What sparked these protests is the deaths of 500 children and total 2000 civilians and the destructions of their homes."

The longshoremen said in a statement that they are not honoring the picket line or taking any political stand. They say they are simply avoiding a confrontation for safety reasons.
