Oakland Settles With Injured Occupy Protester For $645,000
OAKLAND (CBS SF) — The city of Oakland has agreed to settle a claim by a U.S. Army veteran from the Iraq War who was beaten by a police officer during an Occupy Oakland protest two years ago.
According to the Oakland Tribune, the City Council on Tuesday unanimously agreed to pay $645,000 to 34-year-old Kayvan Sabeghi. The protester underwent surgery for a lacerated spleen and was hospitalized for five days.
Sabeghi was the second Iraq War veteran injured by police in the 2011 protests. Scott Olsen, a Marine vet, suffered a fractured skull on the streets of Oakland when he was hit with a police projectile during a clash.
The city had previously awarded a group of 12 Occupy Oakland protesters a $1.17 million settlement last summer, in a claim filed for police misconduct during the demonstrations.
Olsen's claim against the city has yet to be settled.
