Oakland School Ranked 'Most Challenging' In The Nation

OAKLAND (CBS SF) - For the second consecutive year, a Washington Post survey of the most difficult high schools in America reveals that a small Oakland public charter school the most challenging institution for young minds.

American Indian Public Charter easily outdistanced the closest competitor on the Post's annual Most Challenging High Schools ranking with an index score of 21.909, more than five points higher than the second place high school in Texas.

According to the Post, "The index score is the number of college-level tests given at a school in the previous calendar year divided by the number of graduates that year."

According to the newspaper, 100 percent of the students at American Indian Charter passed at least one college-level test during their time at the school, which boasts a 100 percent graduation rate and an average SAT score of 1,523. 100 percent of graduates also went on to attend a 4-year college last year.

Lowell High School in San Francisco was the next highest scoring Bay Area school on the list at number 108; by comparison, it earned an index score of 5.301.
