New BART Delay Plagues System During Friday Afternoon Commute

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- Bay Area Rapid Transit trains on the Fremont to Daly City and Dublin/Pleasanton to Daly City lines were experiencing 30-minute delays in all directions due to a track switch problem for the second time Friday, according to a BART dispatcher.

Track crews responded around 3:45 p.m. to a report of a power issue at the Bay Fair station, the dispatcher said.

The power issue has resulted in problems operating the track switch, he said.

As of around 4:10 p.m., the dispatcher said BART crews were on scene working to repair the issue.

The same station experienced similar problems with the track switch earlier Friday around 11:45 a.m., according to BART spokesman Jim Allison.

Crews were able to manually move the switch into the correct position by around 1 p.m., Allison said.

Other issues - including metal debris on the tracks near West Oakland and police activity in Richmond - have contributed to further delays on BART Friday.

On Wednesday, BART was plagued by day-long delays caused by a broken portion of track near San Francisco Civic Center station, a power outage at some East Bay stations, and police activity at the Lafayette station.
