Muni Alters Maintenance Plans In Light Of BART Strike
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A project to install a fiber broadband network system in San Francisco Municipal Railway's subway tunnel is being postponed until further notice due to the strike by BART workers.
Since the project started on June 22, Muni Metro service through the tunnel between the Embarcadero and Church stations has ended three hours early, at 10 p.m. to allow crews to install the system, Muni spokesman Paul Rose said.
Muni officials say the broadband network, scheduled to be finished in fall 2014, will improve real-time arrival information for passengers and enhance the system's safety and reliability.
After a three-day break for Pride weekend, the project was expected to resume tonight, but has been postponed since BART workers went on strike early this morning. Muni service will continue on its regular schedule, Rose said.
Rose said future dates for the early subway closures will be announced after the BART strike is resolved.
During the strike, Muni is also prioritizing service along the 14-Mission and 49-Van Ness/Mission bus routes, as well as the J-Church and N-Judah lines.
Fare inspectors will be deployed along various routes to help passengers reach their destinations, according to agency officials.
