Mosquitos In San Jose Test Positive For West Nile Virus

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- Adult mosquitoes collected from three San Jose ZIP codes have tested positive for West Nile virus, Santa Clara County spokesmen said.

Santa Clara County Vector Control District officials have consequently scheduled a mosquito fogging treatment from 11 p.m. Thursday to 2 a.m. Friday.

The fogging will be centered at Oakland Road and Berger Drive, spokesmen Russ Parman and Noor Tietze said.

The treatment area is bordered by East Brokaw Road, Charcot Avenue, Fox Lane, Wayne Avenue and McKay Drive to the north, Lundy Avenue to the east, Hedding Street and Berryessa Road to the south, and North First Street to the west.

Affected ZIP codes are 95112, 95131 and 95133. A map can be viewed at

There is no need to relocate during the fogging, Parman and Tietze said. Those who wish to minimize their exposure to the treatment may close their windows and remain inside during the treatment.

Residents of the affected area have been notified by door hangers, AlertSCC, Nextdoor alerts, Yahoo Groups, Twitter and the SCCvector app, Parman and Tietze said.

On Thursday and Friday, vector control staff will answer questions at (800) 314-2427 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents can also submit questions to, Parman and Tietze said.

"Continued WNV activity and warm temperatures mean that the 2016 virus season is not over yet," Parman said in a statement. "Last year, virus activity and fogging operations continued well into October."

West Nile virus first appeared in California in 2003, Parman and Tietze said, and 5,787 people across the state have contracted the virus. Of those, 233 cases were fatal.

A record 53 Californians died of West Nile last year, Parman and Tietze said.
