Little House Relocated From Land In Front Of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A little house in Oakland that was given away for free went on a big adventure Sunday, moving from the front yard of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland to its new permanent home.

When the man who lived in the house in front of the hospital passed away, his heirs finally sold the property to the hospital that surrounded it, and Sunday was moving day.

Moving the structure proved to be tricky for contractors, including avoiding overhead BART tracks.

"We made six inches of clearance underneath that, so we had to measure that a few times," Burton Fisher of Fisher Brothers House Moving said.

The 80-year-old home was moved to make way for a new development on the hospital's property.

"Our plan was always to give it away, and help with the moving expenses rather than seeing it town down," UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland Spokesperson Melinda Kriegel said.
