Kids' Summer Art Activities And Camps Around The Bay

Summer vacation from school doesn't need to mean a vacation from learning. Summertime art activities are definite kid pleasers. Children enjoy making art and getting their hands dirty to show their creative side while meeting new friends. Here are five summer programs bound to please kiddos in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Walt Disney Family Museum Summer Camp Workshops are one- and two-week programs designed to stir young imaginations and develop creativity using traditional art mediums and up-to-date computer technology. Kids will enjoy developing their creative skills as they explore art, animation and filmmaking through original projects and hands-on activities in the workshops. Become a WDFM member and receive a workshop discount. At Animator Boot Camp Intensive, kids will focus on how animated films are produced at this two-week intensive workshop that ends in a film festival and gallery-style project showing. At Artimation Camp, the one-week workshop explores the exciting word of animation with paint and sculpture. The camp ends with a gallery-style showing of projects for family and friends to see.

The Children's Creativity Museum is an interactive art and technology museum just for kids. It is a place that inspires children's imaginations as they create and share in a rich multimedia environment. With each visit, kids come away with a distinctive art or media project that highlights their creativity. Skilled artists and C.I.T.Y. Guides lead children through the creative process as they facilitate studio programs and exhibits throughout the museum. The museum hosts several summer camps for boys and girls, with activities geared to each age group, plus three Go Girls! camps. Summer camp art activities at Alligator Art Studio include drawing, painting, sculpture and ceramics. This year, the children will work on a 24x30-inch acrylic and mixed media painting on stretched cotton canvas and learn what is involved in creating a painting. Planning the work, choosing the paint and color choices, composition and using the paint will be discussed. In addition, many other art activities using ceramics, sculpture, paper making and paper mache projects will be held. Plus, on the first camp day, the young artists will tie-dye T-shirts. Artwork is done in a non-competitive atmosphere, and the small groups of 10 allow children to meet new friends while working on at least two different projects every day. Sessions are for one week, and two, three-hour sessions are offered each week, one morning and one afternoon. Brushstrokes is an artist-owned pottery studio that aims to inspire and develop creativity and build friendships along the way. Camp Brushstrokes offers weekly art camps and workshops for kids, tweens and teens, from ages six through 18. This summer, Camp Brushstroke campers will be painting pottery, sculpting with wet clay, fusing glass, making mosaics, hand-felting jewelry, drawing, painting and finding inspiration in nature by spending time outdoors sketching in hand-made sketchbooks. The five different Art Camps for Kids (ages 6-9) and Mini Matisse Camps (ages 4-5) offer age-appropriate projects. Summer jewelry-making camps are offered for boys and girls ages six and up and include a variety of jewelry-making activities. Based out of a home studio in South San Francisco, campers will explore a special blend of yoga, jewelry and eco-consciousness designed to help get kids get moving, be creative and get outside in the summer. Weekly camps with full-day, half-day, four-day, three-day and single-day camps are available, plus options for early morning and after-camp care. Summer camps are also offered at additional locations in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sonoma County. Fees run from $79 for a single day to $385 for a full day-full week camp.
