Student Stabbed On Campus At James Logan High School In Union City
UNION CITY (CBS SF) -- A student at James Logan High School in Union City was stabbed on campus Friday morning, leading to a lengthy school lockdown and search for the student suspected in the incident.
"My heart's going a hundred miles an hour," said parent Pete Quintana, who raced to the school after receiving a text message about the incident. "This is supposed to be a safe school. We're from Southern California, we moved up here and now this happens."
Union City police said a juvenile suspect involved in the stabbing had been arrested and a lockdown of the school lifted. Students will be allowed to leave for the day at at 3:20 p.m.
The incident began at about 11:05 a.m. at the school on the 1800 block of H St. in Union City. Police quickly responded to the campus and began a room-by-room search for the suspect while the injured student received medical attention.
Anxious parents began arriving at the school by lunchtime.
"She's worried about what happened," said Rosa Palma about her daughter inside the school. "She told me to come pick her up. But I told her, 'Wait, wait because they won't let me."
Students and faculty members were ordered to shelter in place in their classroom while police conducted their search.
Union City Police lifted the lockdown after taking the suspect into custody. Students spilled out of the campus by mid-afternoon -- anxious and reflective on a fight in which one of their classmates could have easily been killed.
"He didn't have to pull out a knife. I mean I wouldn't pull out a knife if I were him that's for sure," said sophomore Jose Cervantez.
KPIX 5 spoke to the victim's brother. He said that after his brother was stabbed he was rushed to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley and underwent emergency surgery. He was out of surgery by 3 o'clock Friday afternoon and is expected to survive.
According to students KPIX reporters talked to on Friday, the suspect didn't get along with the victim or the victim's friends.
"I think it is a common problem but he didn't have to pull out a knife. He could have just, I mean, I don't know, I wouldn't pull out a knife if I was in that situation," said student Jose Cervantez.
