2-Alarm Grass Fire In Livermore Shuts Down Lanes Of I-580 W Near Altamont Pass
LIVERMORE (CBS SF) -- A wildfire burning along Interstate Highway 580 at the eastern edge of Livermore's city limits prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a Sig-alert Monday afternoon.
The fire was reported around 3:15 p.m. in the vicinity of Greenville Road and Highway 580, and a Sig-alert was issued at 3:45 p.m.
The blaze burned 17 acres, but was fully contained within 45 minutes of firefighters arriving on scene. No injuries were reported. The fire was caused by the wheel of a pickup truck falling off, possibly due to mechanical failure, according to Alameda County Fire.
Around 4:30 p.m. two out of four westbound lanes of traffic had reopened, but there were still severe delays for hours.
All lanes were reopened at 6:47 p.m.
A helicopter was seen picking up water nearby to dump on the hot spots of the blackened hillside. The Alameda County Fire Department, Cal Fire and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department responded to fight the blaze.
