Giants Victory Could Also Help The Oakland A's
SAN JOSE (KCBS) - The Giants World Series victory wasn't just good news for the city of San Francisco.
It may also boost the Oakland A's chances of moving to San Jose.
Giants management has been vehemently opposed to the A's moving to the South Bay, where they claim territorial rights, and nothing has changed in that department.
KCBS' Matt Bigler Reports:
But now that they've won the World Series, Santa Clara County Assessor Larry Stone said fans in the South Bay are showing an even greater enthusiasm for baseball.
"This is great for baseball and it's great for sports," Stone said. "And I think that message is being conveyed right now to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball. That the A's would be tremendously successful in a new ballpark in downtown San Jose."
Stone said the popularity of the Giants also means profitability going forward, regardless of competition from another team.
But Andrew Zimbalist, a sports economist at Smith College, said this is not a slam dunk for the A's.
"I don't think it says all of a sudden the city of San Jose should start building a stadium," he said.
The Giants and Major League Baseball have declined to comment on the issue, but MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said on Sunday that a decision on the team would be coming "hopefully in the near future."
