Fremont Washington High School Teacher Accused Of Sex With Student

FREMONT (CBS SF) -- A physical education teacher at Fremont's Washington High School has been arrested for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a student, authorities confirmed Thursday.

Fremont Police said 32-year-old Corine Audiat was booked into Santa Rita Jail on charges of having unlawful sex acts with a minor who was a student at the high school.

In the letter, Washington High officials said Audiat has been placed on unpaid administrative leave. The school told parents Audiat "would not be returning to Washington High."

Audiat has had a career within the Fremont school district for nearly a decade, starting as a substitute teacher, then working at American High School before coming to Washington High in 2012.

During the investigation, detectives learned the suspect and victim began communicating in early 2016. Over the course of a several months, the conversations became more inappropriate and they eventually engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse.

She was arrested last week and on Wednesday other additional charges were filed against her by the Alameda County District Attorney.

"This case is a very unfortunate situation for our community," the police department said in a statement. "Due to the age of the victim and the nature of the investigation, no information regarding the victim's identity will be released."

The superintendent of the Fremont Unified School District said they alerted parents through a letter Thursday about Audiat's arrest.

"We were off last week when the teacher was arrested we were first notified and we've been working with the police department since then," said Fremont Unified Superintendent Jim Morris. "Well the teachers have really been focused on trying to bring normalcy back."

Detectives said they were continuing to investigate the case, and although there has been no evidence of additional victims, police will continue to pursue all leads.

Superintendent Morris said the school would have counselors on hand Thursday for students who feel the need to talk to someone.
