Former East Bay High School Coach Arrested On Sex Charge

WALNUT CREEK (CBS SF) – A 24-year-old junior varsity basketball coach has been charged with having sex with a minor, according to the Walnut Creek Police Department.

Authorities said Catherine Handlin, who was the female Junior Varsity basketball team at Berean Christian High School in Walnut Creek, was arrested in January after they received a call from school administrators about Handlin allegedly being involved in inappropriate activity with a student on campus.

The Contra Costa District Attorney's Office filed two charges this week against Handlin, including unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor and oral copulation with a minor, according to Senior Deputy District Attorney Bruce Flynn.

The alleged victim in the case is a 17-year-old male student at Berean Christian High School, according to Flynn.

Handlin was terminated by school officials on Jan.8, 2016, as soon as her alleged involvement was known.

If Handlin is convicted of all charges, she'll face 3 years 8 months in prison.
