Fire Burns RVs At Oakland City-Run Encampment; Dog Killed
OAKLAND (BCN) -- An Oakland Fire Department spokesperson said Thursday evening that a fire that destroyed three recreational vehicles at an encampment earlier in the day was accidental.
Oakland fire spokesperson Michael Hunt said a person in one of the RVs was burning material, and the fire became out of control.
Five people were displaced by the fire, Hunt said. Originally, it had been reported that three people were displaced.
No one was injured but a dog died in the fire.
The blaze was reported just before 4 p.m. at 34th and Wood streets, where 17 RVs are located. About 20 firefighters responded.
The RVs are lined up in a lot managed by the city of Oakland and Operation Dignity, which helps house homeless persons.
The American Red Cross was notified so it could help the displaced residents.
