Man killed in El Cerrito shopping center parking lot shooting, suspects on the run

Police in El Cerrito are searching for two suspects after a man was shot and killed in a parking lot early Sunday morning.

The El Cerrito Police Department responded to the parking lot of Del Norte Plaza shopping center on San Pablo Avenue around 12:15 a.m. 

"I heard gunshots, maybe four or five of them. And about maybe 30 seconds to a minute later, I heard a big piece of glass break. That's all I heard, there was no screams, nothing," Todd Jalowiec, who lives across the street from the plaza, told CBS News Bay Area.     

Police said they found a man shot in the parking lot near Los Moles Restaurant. The man died, police said. 

His identification has not been released. While the victim's family did not want to speak on camera, they shared that he was a 21-year-old from Oakland who had a bright spirit. 

Witnesses said the suspects were involved in a fight with a victim at his car and shot him, police said. The suspects then took off south on South 56th Street to westbound Potrero Avenue. They were last seen driving south on South 55th Street from Potrero.

The suspect vehicle was described as a 2016 or newer gray Nissan Maxima.

One suspect was described as wearing a black mask and a black North Face puffy jacket. The other was wearing a hat and a black Nike jacket. 

"I feel safe in this area. I can walk to the other 7-Eleven or whatever, but I like to especially because I live close here," Rogelio Oregon, a resident, said.
