SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Earth Day is just around the corner, so we rounded up some of the most beautiful photos and images of our planet taken from space.

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22nd, 1970, and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement.

Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson got the idea after witnessing the damage done by an oil spill in Santa Barbara in 1969, the same year that Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Since then we've seen a number of stunning photos of our little planet from space. Here are a few of the best:
