Daily Madden: What Next For NFL Players?

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS) - The NFL labor dispute appears to be nearing an end as player representatives get ready to vote on a new deal.

John Madden told the KCBS morning crew the next couple of weeks will be busy for coaches and players.

"This is going to be a ridiculous flurry now," Madden said. "Because you not only have to get your players to camp that you have under contract, you have to worry about signing your own free agents if you have a shot at them so they don't go somewhere else, then you have to sign other free agents you might want."

The biggest uncertainty revolves around rookies, whether drafted or not.

"To be honest, I don't know how they have a chance. That's where this thing is really going to hurt, is the development of new players," he said.

John said some kind of NFL training or developmental league is needed.

"That's a direction that the league will eventually go to because it's needed," John said. "For years, we had NFL Europe, and that was really good... It gave them an opportunity to go play the game, and it gave coaches an opportunity to go coach and it gave officials an opportunity to officiate." (8:00)
