SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A new state investigation confirmed that health insurance companies have been promoting bogus lists of doctors available in their Covered California health plans for months.
State regulators surveyed doctors listed as in-network by Covered California's two largest insurers – Blue Cross and Blue Shield, and found nearly half of the doctors said they were either not accepting the insurance plans, were unsure, or couldn't be reached at all.
The Department of Managed Health Care found both insurers "informed enrollees that numerous physicians were (in network) when they were not," according to the report.
State law requires enrollees have access to at least one doctor within 15-days and 15-miles of their home.
Covered California says it is confident the lists are much improved since the report's release.
