Contra Costa Mobile Health Centers Get Financial Boost

RICHMOND (KCBS) – Thousands of school children in Contra Costa County will have the benefit of getting check-ups and screenings without ever having to leave their school.

The county has received nearly $500,000 from the Affordable Care Act, which will help fund two additional school-based mobile health clinics. The vans will make additional stops this year at public schools around Contra Costa.

KCBS' Dave Padilla Reports:

Contra Costa County Public Health Clinics Services Director Sue Crosby said that the grant will help the department provide additional health services to thousands of students annually.

"We will be deploying the vans at our schools once we get them. They will provide pediatric primary care and adolescent care to our youth," said Crosby. "It's vital for our kids to stay in school and to be healthy as well."

Crosby said that county health services will now deploy a fleet of six mobile health clinics to children from elementary to high school.

A total of 5,000 children in Contra Costa are expected to receive care each year from these mobile clinics. The two new vans are expected to be in service within the next year.
