Boat Crash Along Waterfront In San Francisco's Mission Bay Neighborhood Leaves 1 Man Dead

An emergency dispatcher told KCBS that a call was received at 6:13 a.m. that a boat was in distress at Pier 52, south of AT&T Park,

Upon their arrival, fire department crews were only able to find a floating debris field and the man's body, the dispatcher said.

Police said that witnesses told them the boater was trying to motor up to the pier but accidentally hit the throttle slamming the 18-foot boat into the abandoned pier and then spun out of control. The boat, a 1959 Dorsett, then disintegrated and sunk..

A friend of the victim said the man was a longtime boater, who liked having big engines in his boats, but didn't have a kill-switch aboard.

At about 7:30 a.m., the fire department retrieved the man's body and the police department's marine unit was on the scene to gather debris and investigate.
