The first cold front already pushed through the Bay Area on Friday, featuring on and off scattered light showers.

A second system was poised to move in on Friday night through Saturday morning, primarily impacting the North Bay. A little rain was forecast to slide as far south to San Jose during the late afternoon hours.

The third and wettest system was expected to push into the North Bay by Saturday night, spreading rain across the entire region into Sunday night.

Over the weekend, rainfall totals were forecast to reach 2 to 3 inches in the wettest spots of the North Bay by Sunday night, generally .50 to .75 across the rest of the Bay Area.

"The drenching rain will put and end to the fire season and pose great harm to the billion dollar grape harvest," said forecaster Mike Pechner of Golden West Meteorology. "The cold summer slowed the maturity of the crop and the sugar content forcing many vintners to delay much of the harvest until now. Heavy rain could cause severe brown rot destroying the fruit."

The storm track across the Pacific was expected to remain active through the end of next week. After a few dry days next week, a very cold storm from the Gulf of Alaska was forecast to moves in late in the week to bring additional rain for Northern California and the Bay Area.

"The water year appears to be off to a good start for the beginning of a strong La Nina winter," Pechner observed.
