Bay Area's Newest Apple Store Opens In Berkeley

BERKELEY (KCBS) – Apple's Bay Area invasion is continuing in the East Bay, with the grand opening of the company's latest store in Berkeley on Saturday.

Hundreds waited patiently in line for the doors to open at the store on 4th Street, right off of University Avenue.

Apple user Ted Landau said it's an ideal location.

"I live nearby here. Up until now, the nearest one was in Emeryville," he said. "This makes it a lot more convenient and I like Berkeley better than trying to find parking in Emeryville."

KCBS' Anna Duckworth Reports:

Zarina Lazaro manages the boutique clothing store Jigsaw London across the street. She said she was amazed by the crowds.

"I'm just glad the construction is over. It was really loud," she said.

Lazaro said 4th Street is known as a hidden gem compared to other shopping districts in Berkeley and thinks the presence of the store will help bring more people to the area.

But not everyone is happy with the popular company.

"They should make their products in this country instead of overseas," said Mark Lane, whose son works at the store. "It's the largest U.S. company. Why are they manufacturing overseas?"

This is Apple's first foray into Berkeley.
